Monsters In The Dark

When the orange man was running for president the first time around I knew who supported him because the signs were up. The best place to walk is by the lake where the fancy homes with fancy people are fortunate to live. The blue versus red support seemed to be equally divided, although the Magas went all out with bigger flags and dozens of signs planted in their front lawns. I think in every town there is the affluent side and the not so affluent side. Naturally, you go to the fancy houses on Halloween to get the good candy. That means heading to the lake where the big beautiful houses nearly touch the water.

There are two kinds of affluent people when it comes to Halloween. Those who go all out and those who turn off their porch lights and hide in the dark until the official trick or treating is over. Then they scurry out to live their miserable, Scrooge lives. As an adult I enjoy watching the kiddos in their princess (still popular) dresses and Superman (also still popular) tights run around hoping for a good haul. It's also a good time to get to know your neighbors. You see what kind of people they are when they decorate to the nines and pass out the good stuff. Big size chocolate bars and beautifully decorated bakery made cookies. Aaah, the affluent side is nice. Children don't pay attention to political signs but I do and did. I judge. The kids- they just want candy. Everyone knows to go to the houses on the lake, especially the kids from the not so affluent side of town. They arrive in home made costumes carrying a plastic bags for their treats. They mingle with children who wear glittery tulle and brandish expensive light sabers. They were all now on equal footing for their quest for the largest takeaway of sweets. As they ran around I couldn't help noticing whose homes were dark and who welcomed all the kids with bowls of treats and brightly lit up skeletons and witches. Not every Trump supporter was an asshat. One home with Trump signage had a group of men standing on the second floor balcony tossing treats to the kids. Another home, although dark within had decorated their front lawn with gravestones made of giant lollipops. But, for the most part they hung back in the dark and waited for the not so affluent to leave.

I wonder how many children will rely on candy to get them through until the hounds in DC act like adults? I won't be out there this Halloween. I did my last walkabout last year when we were still hopeful, when I truly thought Kamala could end the divisiveness and hate. The signs were up and I felt a sense of joy believing the Trumpers would soon be sorely disappointed. We knew the incoming vengeful psychopath and his minions takeover would be bad, but I don't think the majority understand how absolutely rotten and horrible it would become. So, as the little ones dress up as witches and superheroes, the ghouls in charge remain hiding.

I hope the kids out there have fun. They don't care about what's inside a person's dark mindset. It's all about the stash.
