"Their Father's Hell Did Slowly Go By

"Gather round, children. I've a tale to tell which will turn your hair whiter than Musk's belly. It's about a monster, disguised as part human, part pumpkin. Oh, don't laugh, kiddies, for this monster is scarier than any before him. He calls his minions to create chaos in our world as he himself licks the feet of the beast who whispers in his ear, "Lay waste. Destroy them all."

We are living the nightmare, friends. As adults we try to process the information using knowledge we have gained throughout our lives. We can usually assess what is trash to be tossed and what is a real threat to our existence.

What about children? How much do we tell them, if anything?

I was reading a post by a well known news media host who mentions he was sharing the signal scandal with his thirteen year old. Call me Karen if you wish because I just don't think children need to share what is currently regarded as the mother of all shit shows.

These children have already been traumatized by school shootings and by COVID-19. They are already bombarded with news as soon as they pick up a cell phone, open a computer or open their front door.

I'm not naive to think young people aren't savvy to our current affairs. I do think we need to be very careful on how we share certain news events.

I'm an adult and I am fucking terrified! I just cannot imagine the fear these children must go through. So, is it necessary to keep them up to date on the latest horrors we are subjected to on an hourly basis?

I have a preteen in my life. She is aware of Trump. She knows he is a very bad man. I don't hide from her the fact that I despise him.

I don't share memes or news stories with her. I don't complain about the state of our present ordeal with her. I want her to be a child. I want the bogeymen to be a story of fiction she shares with friends around a campfire.

She does not need to know the monster is real. Not now. Not yet.

They do have problems of their own. I wouldn't push it on their either, but if they have questions, I've got answers!
