Stealing Blog Posts Is The Sincerest Form Of Flattery
After reading Neil Steinberg's blog (yes, he has a blog) about the Battle of Lake Erie which occurred around Put-in-Bay, an island just north of Ohio, I decided to share my own experiences there.
I was there for my baby sister's birthday. My sisters and extended family rented an Airbnb near the lake, where we could sit on the balcony and watch the sun rise as cormorants flew above us.
We had arrived at the tail end of the tourist season, so quite a few businesses had closed up before winter. If you weren't a native your time on the island was running short. The ferry would be soon shutting down. The only other way onto the island was by helicopter or a small plane.
One day while I walked around town I stopped for a coffee. The young woman working was quite chatty. She mentioned cats were starting to go missing because last winter coyotes had crossed the frozen lake and were now snacking on Molly's and Tiger's.
The only right way to get around is to rent a golf cart. Even though it was near the end of the season there were still plenty of people about. I think you could complete the trip around the island in half an hour. It has a few wineries, ✅, live music, ✅ and a place where you can buy a bag of dirt, then sift through the dirt for cool gems. ✅
Other than that... the museum.
Neil S. wrote about the Battle of Lake Erie. I was more interested in a book at the museum which recorded the plight of the men who fought in the battle who were now trying to receive disability. The majority of those injuries were auditory. The blasts of the cannons destroyed their hearing. Some soldiers were completely deaf, others had severe tinnitus or pain. One man waited twenty years to receive any compensation.
Gosh, nothing really changes, does it? These are the men who fought for our freedom and they had to beg for help from the government. Sound familiar?
Now we have a frickin' loon in the house. Trump might delete, deny, defy the past.
My favorite photo is one I took of the two rangers taking a break. Looking at the ranger with the too big hat, the baggy uniform and that awesome moustache made me smile.
Now I wonder if they were collateral damage. Another pointless hatchet act by Musk who calls us woke parasites.
Gahd, sometimes I just want to hide in a corner and cry.
