"Is it the N word, Pat?"
I'm going to go out on a limb and say those black servants who Daddy Musk said were Elon's friends would probably disagree.
Elon claims he grew up in a not so fancy upbringing, better than some, but not the money bags he is today. Yet, they had servants. Oh, I apologize, I meant his friends, who cleaned his toilet, washed his skid marked undies, then went home to their shanties in the bantustans.
Remember Paula Deen, who wanted to throw a plantation wedding? The servants would be black men (only she didn't say, "black") dressed as slaves.
It wasn't until Deen was sued by a former employee the truth of Deen's use of the N-word was exposed.**
Deen said she was deeply sorry. She didn't think anything wrong when using the derogatory word. Why they said it all the time down South, y'all. What's the fuss?
I remember Deen hitting the morning shows to blubber her apologies. She held the hand of one of her male, black employees as she said they were friends and he understood she was just a big ol' kidder. The extreme discomfort from everyone on the set was palpable, especially from her employee, who said nothing as he tried to pull his hand away.*
I don't remember the first time I heard the word, but I know it wasn't from my parents. So it was most likely from a neighbor. A moment that still stays with me is when mom needed a ride to a doctor's appointment. Our neighbor, "Virginia" agreed to drive her. I think I was included because Mom was going to buy school shoes for me afterwards.
As Mom went in for her appointment, Virginia and I sat in the car. I was sitting in the back, reading, when I heard Virginia gasp. She hissed at me, "Maggie, lock your door. Now!" I looked up to see a black male walking by the front of the car. I don't remember if I locked the car door or if Virginia did. I do remember hearing the click, and felt my face burn in shame when I saw the man turn his head our way. He had heard it as well.
Her reaction was not an anomaly. It was America.
Still is.
But, getting back to Elon, who is concerned white men are being vilified and treated most unfairly today. He found an orange friend who heartily agrees with his beliefs, who also grew up with a Daddy who cheated people of color every day of his life and taught little Donny the ropes.
2025, and we still discriminate because of the color of skin.
It's the reason Trump has been given carte blanche to destroy the planet.
I call him the other N word.
Nazi.
