Alone

Late at night when I can't sleep I'll go to YouTube and watch men build cabins in the wilderness, using hand tools and manly muscles. They usually have a dog to keep them company and sometimes some musical instrument they hand carved that they play at night before the cozy mud and clay fireplace.

I have always been fascinated by people who can be self reliant, to be able to build a shelter using pine trees and moss.

The other day I started watching the series, 'Alone, The Beast' where three people are dropped off in a remote area where they will remain for thirty days. They arrive with nothing but the clothes they are wearing. Depending on where they are left, they are given one animal (already dead) to use as food and other uses. They must find a way to skin, cut, and preserve the animal. They also need to make a shelter and start a fire.

In the first episode I watched, there was one woman and two men. They all had previous experiences hunting and living off the land. The woman was the one who skinned the moose with a rock. She was quite amazing. One man gave up after a day or so. He said he missed his kids. I would have respected him if he had just said this idea was nuts, he was scared and cold and miserable and just wanted to go home. I think the second man "tapped out" as well.

I need to watch these shows just in case I ever need to survive on my own in the wild, although the roughest terrain I've encountered was our state recreational park. But, I have to be ready. Who knows, if Elon gets his way I may have to live in the woods.

I want to know how to start a fire with two sticks and moose guts. I want to build a shelter using logs and mud, along with the cutest thatch roof. I want a loyal friend, perhaps a raccoon or opossum. I will carve bowls and a guitar. I will have a garden of various vegetables and will preserve them in glass jars, mouth blown with bellows made from a boar's stomach and my mud kiln.

I will make tea using pine needles and roast a delicious duck who got too close to my rock and stick trap.

Yes, I'm ready. Right after this episode of Alone...
