I've played golf twice in my life. I'm not sports oriented so it was no surprise I did not do well. I wouldn't categorize it as a sport either. It's a lovely walk, swinging at balls with sticks. Back in the day when we only had three tv stations to choose from, golf was what I watched on a Saturday afternoon. I only liked to watch because the grass was so pretty and it was quiet. So very quiet. Apparently, that isn't a thing anymore if what I read regarding the Ryder Cup event is true and why would they lie? Now they hire comedians to fire up the audience and to heckle the players. Seems Rory McIlroy got the brunt of the barbs and finally couldn't take it anymore and yelled at the crowd to stfu. I think it's kind of funny but a bit sad. Underneath all those controlled and thoughtful moments on the course there's smoldering rage. We've seen it come out at times when a ball go into the sandpit or the pond. The player snaps his golf club in two or tosses it into the water. As for the audience- I never understood the appeal to follow men who played with sticks and to whisper and move slowly in order not to distract the players. But hey, to each their own, eh? Sadly, even the mucky muck "sport" has been infiltrated with the commoners. I remember my former boss always talking about getting out on the links. His kind of game wasn't exactly like how the pros played. He and his buddies would zoom around the exclusive country club in their carts, drink beer, pour shots and try to hit a teeny tiny ball into a hole. Sometimes they went after birds and slow animals. As much as whoever hired this comedian would like people at home to not sleep through the sleep inducing sleepalong, getting the bystanders to heckle the players is bad form. I doubt it's something that will catch on so golf will be played as it has always been played by professionals, boring af. Fore!
