The100 Year Event- Again
When I lived in my crooked, deplorable house I rented by the Fox River, one of the first oddities I saw was a brand new, cute yellow house in the middle of a lake. I eventually learned it wasn't a lake, but the Fox River rising after the rains. My deplorable was a few blocks away from the river so I wasn't too worried about the water rushing in which would have been a blessing, actually. I would walk towards the river and count the houses which were two thirds under the water. You would think these people would move, but they love the river, the woods, the privacy, until finally most of them were forced to leave the flood plain. No insurance company was going to help them rebuild year after year, which brings me to the current situation. Yes, the rains are here. Every night I watch the skies light up and the boom of thunder rumble in the skies. I no longer live in the ugly house by the river, but the stubborn still do. I heard FEMA is going to check out the devastating conditions, mostly around Milwaukee, but I would assume they'll look at the river, shake their heads and hopefully say, "No money for you."
Yes, it's awful to lose your home. It is. But when you rebuild, rebuild and rebuild like a tenacious ant who refuses to leave, then you deserve no help, no funding, no nothing but a good luck. Many of the houses I saw underwater that year were torn down, including the yellow house. The area is off limits for rebuilding which was the smart thing to do and took the government's intervention to stop the madness of rebuilding in the exact same spot where you lost house one and maybe, two. It happens in earthquake prone areas, wildfire prone areas, tornado prone areas and flood prone areas. If you want to stay, knowing your chances are good for another 100 year event, then by all means, live your masochistic life, just don't expect a handout.
I know, cruel, cruel Thingy. It's tough love, kids, just some tough love.
