You're Only An Idiot If It Doesn't Work

I just finished watching a YouTube video of a small business making soy sauce. This sauce is so expensive four tablespoons cost around $125. It's a long and involved process.

I wanna know... how did this begin? Who decided one day to grind some soybeans, add a little bit of this, a little bit of that, let it sit for ten years, then press out the sauce from giant stacks of cloth and wood?

The same with silk. Some person decided to make a beautiful robe of various colors using the cocoon of the silkworm. Someone had to touch that cocoon, pick it, boil it, pull and twist it, dye it, thread it, sew it...

How about a stinky, smelly sheep. " I think I will make a sweater using that stuff."

Did that same person invent knitting?

And

Baumkuchen (A German cake)

Or

Those hard candies bought at Christmas time that sit in a can for five months until you're feeling snackish and the only thing around is that big sweet lump stored behind the Early Times whiskey you keep in stock for Grandpa Bill.

I've watched videos of how they make the intricate design in the center while they keep the sugar soft, yet not too soft, and how they have to thread the soft sugar on a hook and ...

Who started that?

Paper

Glass

Glass blowing. "Hmm, I'm gonna stick my mouth on this tube and blow on some frickin' hot lava."

Pickles

Kimchi. "Hon, isn't this the jar of vegetables you made six months ago?  I'm gonna try that."

Kanji. Why? There are over 50,000 Japanese kanji. School children are expected to learn at least two thousand. It's beautiful, but it's just so much. Any language is a wonder and how did they begin? One cave dweller points to stick...

German neanderthal: "Stock."

English Neanderthal: "Stick."

"Stock. "

"Stick."

"Stock. "

French neanderthal: "Baton."

But then you had others in your circle using, stock, stick, baton...

It boggles my mind when I think of all the amazing creations with complex steps someone started with varying results. R.I.P.

Kudos to the many brave souls who were curious and just had to go there.

You're only an idiot if it doesn't work.
