I Tip My Hat To You And You And ..
Let's talk about tipping in America. I watched this video of a New Yorker going to a famous deli to eat a $30 sandwich. I know New York is expensive, and that sandwich looks good, but besides the cost of the sandwich the guy tips twice before he gets out of there. Twice!
I think Americans are the only humans who are expected to tip. The guy in the video payed $5 to the nasty guy behind the counter, then another $5 for .. I have no idea why.
It riles me to no end when restaurant servers make so little money they rely on those tips. I remember working at Hackneys in my teens and my hourly wage was $2.50. I remember one man who came in every day for lunch. He ordered the most expensive steak, then left a quarter tip. The custom of tipping in the service industry has not changed. Restaurant servers still rely on tips as do Instacart employees. I always tip when I receive good service. I know these people don't get paid a decent salary.
However, I will not pay some guy standing behind a counter who puts my purchase into a bag and expects a reward. I won't give a tip to smart ass delivery drivers who knock over plants and curses the amount of time spent having to do this job.
A tip is a reward for good service, not an expectation. I've seen videos of food deliverers tossing away food when they see the tip amount.
We did learn during COVID-19 how important these people are, although people are slowly forgetting their vital need.
Most Americans are complaining about the cost of eggs, yet here we see people willing to pay $30 for a sandwich and tipping twice for the experience.
I guess as long as people are willing to pay ridiculous amounts, businesses will continue to up the cost and exploit employees.
It's the American way.
*One of my favorite paintings, A Bar at the Folies Bergere by Edouard Manet. The expression on her face... a look of wishing to be anywhere but behind a bar, serving drinks and drinks.
