Why, Why, Why, Delilah...

There wasn't much family time in the Thingy household except for Sunday evenings. I hated Sundays with a passion because it preceded Monday - school. I also hated it because Dad liked to hog the TV and watch Ed Sullivan. Sometimes I didn't mind, especially when the Beatles performed. It was only sullied by Dad's constant haranguing that they looked like thugs. He abhorred them. My mother and sisters loved them. Mom was a lifetime fan.

One singer Dad fawned over was Tom Jones. He frickin loved Tom. His voice was magnificent, Dad would say as Tom twerked onstage. He was a real manly man. Tom Jones creeped me out. He used to wear suits with his shirt unbuttoned to his navel and wore gold chains on his disgusting hairy chest. The Beatles were beautiful. They sang about love and hard day nights.

I hear Tom is a nice guy and this isn't really about him except for a song he sang. Delilah. It's not a song I thought about until today when I saw a blurb regarding Metallica, another band I loved and I'm guessing Dad would despise. They recently had a concert in Cardiff and sang the song, Delilah. Here are the lyrics. 👇

Yeah, a guy stalks his ex then stabs her death, sung in a great, snappy tune. I think Tom liked to snap his fingers as he and Dad sang together.

Anyway, the officials frown upon lyrics that are violent which makes me wonder if they had ever heard of Metallica before giving them the gig?

But, that's not what I want to discuss either. I mentioned in the previous post about someone doing a naughty deed, then asking forgiveness later. The band donated a large sum of money to a food shelter to appease the angry officials, so like many people with wealth, they bought some souls.

Back in the day, I listened to a lot of folk music and Appalachian bluegrass where murder, cheatin', lying is what these songs are about. The fact that they are sung with a fiddle and acoustic guitar softens the edges.

Y'all remember, 'Every Breath You Take,' by The Police, dontcha? I sure do. I loved it, until I actually listened to what he was saying. "Every move you make, every breath you take, I'll be watching you."

I'm betting The Police made a zillion dollars off that song. And I'm guessing it's not too popular anymore. At least I hope so. Songs tell a story just like a movie or a book. They also dig deeper into our psyche. We feel them, we relate to them. Yet some are just fun to see along to. "I'll be watching youuuu..." Catchy.

Long story short, I have more of an issue with Metallica paying their way out of something they were told not to do rather than the actual song.

Don't do that. And I still hate Sundays.
