While Y'all Are Fasting...
You know what's nice? Forgetting yesterday was Ash Wednesday. Back in the day you knew who was a devout Catholic when you'd see them with the black ash smeared on their foreheads. I don't see that these days. Are people losing their religion? A fella on Bluesky wanted to know why everyone was making pancakes. I said it was an Irish thing. Actually, it's more a religious thing which happens to include the Irish and billions of believers of God Almighty. So now for forty days you are to be like Jesus and fast. Poor Jesus, his daddy was a downright bastard.
Repent you sinners !
Yeah, fuck that shit. I still don't understand how seemingly intelligent people still believe in this nonsense. I think it's because of the structure involved. You are told this is how you will behave for the next forty days. No, not forty days - for the rest of your miserable lives. People like rules to follow. It makes them feel that there is a purpose for us and all of this (((extends arms outward))) Otherwise, to believe we are here because of a glitch in an atom, a spark in the dark, that this is all random, makes people palpitate. It's just too difficult to fathom that there is absolutely no reason for our existence other than a big bang. Naturally I cannot say with 100 percent certainty that there is no God, but golly gee, is this entity really what you want to follow? He's beyond cruel. He watches you and judges your life then imposes sentence when you die. It's just so disgustingly stupid. 2026 and people still believe in a nothing. The reality is many people have lost their relationship with the guy upstairs. But, it's not something you say out loud because even if all the people in the room with you have also have had doubts, you just can't say that out loud. However, those people with "family values," have caught on. They know there will be no angel at the pearly gates to size them up and either give you the thumbs up or the map to the highway to hell. They have learned how to use religion to hide their blackened hearts, just as priests and prisoners have been doing for centuries. The god card gives them cart blanche to be wretched, evil shits. So, I really shouldn't complain. Fear of being punished by an invisible entity is mighty strong. Those Bible authors knew that. They realized they had to find a way to keep folks in line. You can't tell them Santy Clause won't be coming if you're bad, they had to ratchet up the fear factor for the grown ups, make that spirit one mean sumabitch.
Watching the hosts on the morning news show bow their heads and pray for one of their coworkers (y'all know who I'm talking about) made me sick to my stomach. How's those prayers doin'? I bet that God fearing woman begged God to help her. And where was your God when schoolchildren were shot up as they cried out for their mothers? Where was he when Alex Pretti was shot in the back? Where is he when a fucking nutcase tells people to stop vaccinating their children? And yet, millions of people are obediently making pancakes to begin the rituals.
I don't need to be threatened to do the right thing. The majority of people who do not believe in a god don't go around killing and creating havoc because they think there are no consequences. But take a good look at all those people in the Trump regime clutching their crosses around their necks as they lie right to your face, as they protect a man who preyed on children. Does it not make you question your loyalty?
I don't really remember the exact time little Maggie had an epiphany and said, "Wow, this is some bullshit." It was most likely a gradual disconnect until, here I am. Free from chains that bind and brainwashes that blind. It's discouraging to see how religion has created the world we live in, one of hate, intolerance, greed and wars.
But, I sure hope you enjoyed those pancakes. You sure don't wanna get the guy up there angry.

I joke. But more seriously: I'm glad I was not raised in any religious tradition. My mother is an ex-Catholic, and from what she describes, the brainwashing process they put people through is pretty intense.
