The Murderers Of Alex Pretti

Alex Pretti

So now we have names behind who murdered Alex Pretti. At first I couldn't comprehend the complete irony that Pretti was shot by two men of Mexican ethnicity. But then I thought of my girlfriend from high school, Maria, who was Mexican American. She lived most of her young life in a nice American suburb in the Midwest, living with her grandparents who spoke no English. Maria was the product of a one night stand. Her absent father lived in Chicago while her mother raised her other children in southern Texas. I first believed Maria was my savior and friend. My first introduction into her true nature arose when we were driving through Elgin, heading to her Uncle's home for the weekend. They both started speaking in Spanish while they pointed and laughed at a group of men standing outside a home. I didn't understand them until Maria used a slur I definitely understood. It was a shock to me and I felt sick to my stomach. We didn't talk this way in my home. How could my "friend" say such a vile word to the people she had shared a culture with? They went through the same intolerance and bigotry. She and I walked the school halls in the affluent village where we were the misfits, the weird and untouchables. People didn't look at Maria's birth certificate. They judged her by her skin color. And here she was, feeling superior to a group of people who weren't born here but sought a better existence. So, it's not really shocking when two men with Latino surnames shoot a man who was protesting the plight of illegal immigrants. It's the mentality we see when people who have managed to get into a good school, pay off their debt and scream foul when Biden wanted to help those who were bogged down in debt. "Well, we didn't get any help, why should you!" Because Maria had a legal piece of paper she thought she was so much better, although she lived in the exact same environment, speaking Spanish to communicate with her relatives, always making tortillas from scratch, eating Mexican food every single day and listening to musica Mexicana.

All that anger those two men have for people they despise slammed into the back of one man. They thought themselves better. Now, they are nothing but cold blooded murderers. Isn't it ironic?
