The Nightstand
As Berthold mentions in his last post, there's a lot of slop out there. He's a nice guy so he doesn't name names. I'm not so nice. So here's some slop you should avoid. Olivia Nuzzi's book, whatever it's called. It's not doing well, although someone bought it because I keep seeing excerpts from it, things none of us should know. She was recently released from her contract from Vanity Fair. That magazine was something that would have been on my nightstand back in the day. I enjoyed looking at things I'd never be able to buy. I liked the dozens of paper perfumes that permeated my space. Even some of the articles were good, mostly dealing with rich people who had problems, like murder and tax evasion. Graydon Carter and I stopped visiting around the same time. Another magazine I used to buy for my weekend pleasure was, Mojo, a magazine filled with musical pleasure. The best part was that every magazine came with a CD of music you may not have heard before. I loved those CDs. I have no idea where they have gone. Mojo is still around but it'll cost you over $25 for the latest issue. Good grief.
I still like the physical feel of a book, although I don't buy new. I head towards Thriftbooks, Walmart and even Google books for the used treasures. So, what's on my nightstand? Hopefully no slop.
1) The Snow Leopard. by Peter Matthiessen
2) A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens
Need I explain the plot? I am a Dickens fan. Shoot me. First let me read this classic tale.
3) Desert Star, by Michael Connelly. I am also a Connelly fan, who writes the Harry Bosch books. I'm a bit nervous here because I've read so many in the series and I don't keep track of those I have read. I'm hoping this is new to me.
4) The Merry Recluse, by Caroline Knapp
I do not know who this woman is and I am mortified because I think I will love her. I found her by reading an article in The Huff-Post, by Erin Hill. She writes about staying home on Christmas day and loving it. Then she mentions, Knapp. I'm looking forward to reading this one. Actually, all of them!
What's on your nightstand?
*The plot summaries are AI generated, but they look about right. I did not buy these books based on AI recommendation. That's slop.

Wow, a magazine that came with a CD? Those were the good old days...
