The "Dummy" Won

This was more a three ring circus than a pageantry. Why they are still in existence is beyond me and one thing that is made clear after reading about this debacle is the world of putting on display beautiful women is still handled by men, who seem to be falling apart at the ball gown seams. The runway walk portion is no better than a dog show where the animal is trained to perform whilst looking as gorgeous af. I also wonder if this year's constant chaos was a well planned scheme to get people interested once again in the marketing of beauty? I fell for it after one of the organizers called Miss Mexico a dummy or dumbbell or some insulting name. The barb changes depending on what media source you read. Lo and behold, the winner is the "dummy" Miss Mexico! Why there's no hanky panky here. She won fair and square. In between the start and the shocking outcome (not) was some weird stuff like contestants walking off the stage into a trip to the hospital. Or Miss Israel giving death glares to Miss Palestine. Or more organizers quitting because they claim the vote is rigged. Nooooo, you don't say.

It baffles me as to why this charade is still going on. Who actually watches this parade of lovely beings who walk the plank, being judged for their perfectly perfect stroll of perfection? I can still remember listening to the announcer back in the day give out the contestants measurements as she strutted before a thousand leering eyes and most likely her proud parents who were thrilled their daughter turned out looking like a Ellie Mae Clampett rather than Jane Hathaway.

The fact is beautiful people are still treated with reverence and awe. There is a funny, and sadly true episode on 30 Rock where Liz Lemon is dating a gorgeous man who glides through life because people treat him with deference. He lives in Liz's life for a short time, but is so uncomfortable he goes back to his easy life of adulation and people submitting to him. Being a mere mortal was too hard. Another fact- we all want to be beautiful. What is considered beautiful is an ever evolving social construct. Right now we live in a world of big butts, big lips and glowy skin that looks like a constant sweat.

Sadly, as long as our self worth is wrapped around what's presented on the outside, whatever is going on in your head is always going to be in second place. I'd be surprised if anyone ever said, "Gahd, she looked like a gargoyle but she was reading my favorite book. I was smitten."

Of course the powers that be who bring us the world of beautiful women to judge would disagree. These women will one day be doctors, lawyers, scientists and the biggest honor of all, mothers! Yes, that's why they compete- to show how very intelligent they are. "Look at that woman! Doesn't she walk like she has an IQ of 160!"

I'm not bitter. I've been privy to both sides. Maggie in a short dress and full makeup gets doors held open. Maggie with a stained sweatshirt and crooked glasses gets a door in her face. It's kind of sad and I have no moral of the story. It's just an observation that I wish was not so glaringly blatant and still as strong as ever. My mom used to love to say, "We've come a long way, baby!"

Have we, mom?
