| The actual store |
This shouldn't anger me. But, it does. A new grocery store opened up in New York City called Meadow Lane. It's a store for people who don't mind spending $15 for a container of raspberries. If you watch this video which follows an influencer who walks around picking up a few items which easily fit into a small tote bag, then pays over $130, you might understand why the owner of the store is not getting a warm welcome from the 'hood. The owner, Sammy Nussdorf, who oozes elitist ice balls, was once making loads of money in finance but got tired of making money so he opened up a store where only people making loads of money can shop. Apparently, customers have been lining up around the block for their chance to get in. Hey, it's new. People love new things. It gives us all a reason to wake up every morning- something new to look at.
I'm all for people making money and if shoppers want to spend $15 for the same product they can buy at the Jewels for half the price, you go, bros! (A voice in my head says, "A fool and his money are soon parted.") Nussdorf claims he has received death threats which seems rather odd to me. "Hey, Imma gonna make you swim with da fishes youse keep selling dem tomatoes like they lobsters!"
According to Ammy (link above) many of the customers are influencers who were invited to stop buy, shop and give an "honest" review. I'm assuming they received a discount the little people won't enjoy. As for the regular people, they don't seem impressed. A woman who critiqued some of the more popular items, so you don't have to, was quite underwhelmed. Just looking at the store, it screams, "Not for you!" When I walk into a grocery store I like to see an abundance of delicious and colorful food, not a measly selection of outrageously priced products surrounded in beige.
So- why do I want this guy to fail? Bigly fail. Well, one- he comes off as an asshole. I don't understand his weird interview where he said he decided to exchange making big money with making big money. If he had said he likes fruit, or likes selling pretty cupcakes maybe I'd like him. Nah, probably not. It's his cockiness, his self anointed self righteousness that brings out my completely unfair and biased reaction. I hope his fruit shrivels and the gluten free bread turns green with mold after the sugar dust settles and people realize they need to pay rent, or realize they could buy ten apples for the price of his one. I hope he fails because I don't like to see people being robbed, even if they don't seem to mind.
That's a great thing about living in this country. You can go for the moon, or you can be a dumpster diver. What a country.
